Streaming giant Netflix has calls from conservatives to boycott the company after co-founder Reed Hastings donated an exorbitant sum to Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential bid. President Joe Biden shocked the nation when he recently announced he would drop out of the 2024 race. Despite the shake-up in Democratic leadership, Hastings donated $7 million to Harris’ campaign.
After President Biden announced that he would be withdrawing from his reelection bid, Hastings quickly backed Vice President Kamala Harris, supporting her takeover of the Democratic ticket. “Congrats to Kamala Harris — now it is time to win,” the Netflix co-founder posted on X. However, Hastings’ comment drew significant backlash from conservatives on the social media platform.
One person blasted Hastings for his endorsement, suggesting that there was an undemocratic “coup” that forced Biden out of his reelection bid. “Congrats”? What are you congratulating her for? She committed a coup against the sitting president of the United States. Where’s Joe?” they wrote. Another user implored Hastings to comment on an accomplishments Harris had to show. “Can you tell me one thing she did while she was VP, ” they said.
Following Hastings’ vocal support of Harris, many have called for a boycott against the streaming service. “I think it’s time to boycott Netflix. They’ are overcharging Americans anyway,” one social media user wrote. Another person appeared to have already cancelled their own subscription to Netflix, writing, “So glad I cancelled Netflix.”
Another person echoed similar sentiment, writing, “Just cancelled Netflix…this was the final straw…too woke and clearly anti American…any company actively contributing to Harris who lied for 4 years and is completely unfit for office is not getting my money…” One user weighed in, “Obviously, operation weekend at Bernie’s was supposed to culminate in at least getting Biden over the finish line with all of the cheating no doubt they have planned, and then Kamala could just step into the role without the gamble.”
