Cat Discovered in Basement 20 Years After She Was Abandoned

An unidentified cat has been relying on the compassion of the people who reside in the New York City apartment complex where she was left behind since her owners moved out.

Her owners abandoned her in 1997, according to the superintendent, which is 20 years ago.

The senior cat has spent two decades living alone in the basement of the building without any access to sunlight or fresh air.

Earlier this year, Anita Diamantopoulou, a video editor here at The Dodo, moved into the apartment building and learned about the cat in the basement.

Diamantopoulou told The Dodo, “I would go and give her food and pet her.” “She’s quite friendly and enjoys head massages!”

Diamantopoulou was adamant about getting the cat, whom she affectionately refers to as Granny, out of the building. She brought Granny to a veterinarian, who administered immunizations and performed blood tests on her.

Granny is really frail. She is also lacking the majority of her teeth. She still enjoys eating, drinking water, and having her face rubbed. Despite the fact that she was abandoned two decades ago, she is a very affectionate person. This adorable kitty has no intention of returning to the basement.

But Diamantopoulou already has a cat, and she couldn’t take in another one. So she worked to find a solution for Granny.

Luckily, a friend agreed to foster Granny — and possibly adopt her, assuming all goes well. So over the weekend, Diamantopoulou brought Granny into what was probably the first home the cat had seen in 20 years.

Granny gingerly exited her cat container and had a look around. In comparison to the darkness she was used to, the brightness was shocking for her.

“She stayed in the toilet the first day because it was dark and cooler,” Diamantopoulou added. “I think she doesn’t like the sun because she hasn’t gone out in a long time.”
